Amidst illegal efforts to overturn election outcomes, a nation that wants to maintain a rule-of-law democracy MUST bring accountability BEFORE the next election.
As I explain above, not doing so INVITES the very chaos and deep danger we are enduring now.
First, it invites the lawbreaker from the prior election to run again…it’s the best way for him and his allies to avoid accountability. It’s the reason to run, as it was for Trump at the outset.
Second, it creates a “nothing to lose” mentality, and an intense incentive to cross every line and break additional laws to win that second election in order to avoid that accountability. Punishment for the second wave of crimes won’t be marginally worse than the first set of crimes so there’s little reason to hold back.
And that’s why we are seeing, already, such chaos—and are bound to see far worse.
Our system of justice and courts have let us down in the deepest way.
We must overcome all this through the elections this year and our collective work to protect democracy at the ballot box.
Then we must work ensure this never happens again.
