Thanks for putting this grocery list together with prices and watching what happens to prices starting next Monday. My money is on increased prices and more lies!

Appreciate you and all you are doing!

Awesome! I did the same thing on Dec 2, taking photos of several of the very cheapest eggs, bread, and milk at Food Lion in Durham NC. They all had WIC labels. How about setting up an online place where people across the US can upload their photos and we can aggregate and compare?

This needs to be restacked and repeated every 2-3 months to keep reminding us what it was when his regime took over - and then with a comparison - kinda like a "how it started, how it's going" post. And of course he lies - he's pathological and doesn't know anything else - "repeat it often enough and it becomes true" is his mantra

One other thing to consider, and I don't want to give Trump any breaks on his promise to lower food costs, but should you "*" (footnote) an item like eggs? We all know that there is a significant outbreak of bird flu in the US now, which requires the elimination of millions of egg laying chickens. We both shop at Kroger's in the Cincy market, and eggs are at an all time high (12 for $4.29). Simple supply and demand. And the price is going to continue to climb unless Kroger's treats eggs as a loss leader product. Do you indicate that? Do you do two indexes, one with and without eggs. It would also be helpful to track weight and number of items since manufactures will decrease volume/items, and keep the price the same. Hope you are well.

Each one of these is per a certain unit. (Which I have recorded). I will be sure they are consistent over time.

His promise was very specific. He did not give any break for extenuating circumstances, so neither should we.

Kindly include units in your chart/table. Thanks!

Actual 12-egg carton price today (1.16.25) is $4.49, given your picture says Garde A **Extra** Large, not just Large.

I love this. How do we get his voters to do the same study at their stores?

That's a really ambitious notion, considering their general intellectual deficits. 98% wouldn't comprehend and the other 2% don't give a shit, as long as they get to say "retard" and "pussy" at work without consequence.

It truly will be interesting to see where your prices go. Obviously all parts of the country are different. I live in FL, no Kroger’s nearby. Some of my prices are currently higher than yours already. My choices here are Winn-Dixie, Publix, Walmart or Aldi. You have compiled a nice cross section of brands and items though. Something we all can use to jog the memory going forward.

I believe that you may see pigs fly before mr donald brings prices down for the public although he may be getting eggs free for hmself. I have heard that he does not pay his bills

Expand full comment

It does pay to be rich. People give you all sorts of freebies. You can get a better discount on such things as insurance, loan interest, etc. If you own existing capital, bankruptcies are forgiven (as in Trump), and your credit rating stays high. If you're poor, rent, yet pay all bills on time, not a blemish, but don't have capital to spare, your credit rating is low and you have to pay higher interest on loans. You often have to live in a more compromised, less expensive housing area, so you get charged more for car insurance. Groceries are often priced higher for the poor areas and "food deserts."

There are progressive curves on these measurements of income inequality. For some, it plummets downward . . . for others, it accelerates rapidly skyward, making money off money.

I see you go for the good stuff—DeCecco pasta 👨‍🍳💋

They’ll find a way to blame D’s when prices skyrocket.

Good idea!

You did not include the quote post-election where he backtracked saying something like "it is very hard to lower prices."

How many people noticed that? Media should be called out for not highlighting Trump's frequent caveats . . . his "get out of jail free cards."

Please add bacon. For some reason the right wing seems fixated on bacon.

This is brilliant. I keep hearing about the price of groceries and yet I myself have not seen such an extreme problem. Over the span of maybe six or eight years? Maybe... I've seen temporary price increases on specific items but depressed buying seems to bring them down some. I know milk is more now than recent years, but maybe that's compared to before the pandemic? The problem is I live in an area with easy shipping (hub) and plenty of competition, so if I find one place jacked up milk I could switch to another and they know it.

My experience may be totally local, but as the buyer for a large household I do notice and I do remember so I can compare. I have long suspected that many of those complaining about eggs and milk also have short memories or are easily influenced and if they're told things are going up and that it's eggs and milk they "remember" that to be true. Maybe they have five phones on their plan with tons of paid apps (and haven't checked recently to even see how many) and all of the TV streaming services and they just know that Somehow their dollar isn't stretching as far anymore. Which is true financial discomfort. Or maybe they live in a town with two grocery stores and one newspaper. Anyway, I don't know where to check things like the historic price of groceries or, for that matter, gas.

Bacon is on it

Weird. I missed it. Going back...

Dagnab! There it is, right up top, alphabetically of course. I do wonder what Little Bits are... a cereal? Wait! I googled it... a candy.

I disagree. There are two grocery stores in my town, and prices have gone up and up. I don’t have a short memory, I have a small pension and it means I keep careful track of what I’m paying from month to month.

It's like that with gas stations. I noticed a long time ago that if you have three gas stations on four corners, they will likely match prices upward.

In the old days, we called that "price fixing."

This is a good example of how it would be great to have many people submitting prices. I actually said two because, without knowing for sure, I'd think two could just lock step with each other whereas having the two dozen or so we have within just a few miles would make that more difficult. Still, there are so many factors that a broad sample across them would be very interesting. Of course, this one author can only do this one sample. By the way, I'm in northern VA.

Your first comment lines made me burst out laughing! So true . . .

Great idea. We need indisputable ongoing proof. BTW, you’re getting a deal on eggs- they’re over $5.00 where I live.

Nice idea; definitely on the right track. But the chart is pretty useless without including the AMOUNT of each item the given dollar value purchases.

Expand full comment

I of course recorded that too

Recording and not publishing serves no one.

The key is that I use the same price per unit over time. Will provide that in future

Thank you! We have no way of knowing what you record if it's not published (as raw data or a derivative thereof). I spent a career in hard science, so, please forgive my being such a stickler on this - it's baked into my DNA, by now. 😁

Expand full comment

I am definitely on the page for "hard science," but I'm not sure how much the general public or the media care how honest we are [see David's column about GOP-initiated "confusion" on the gerrymandering issue in Ohio].

But at least we can be honest with ourselves. Sigh . . .

Collecting these prices monthly will give you better data to chart, and will help us to better understand any seasonal differences.

Thanks for the grocery index. We need to hold The Felon accountable for the promises he made and has broken. He never had any intention of working to lower grocery prices. That was fodder for the rubes whose votes he needed. He doesn't need them anymore, so they're entering the Find Out phase about what happens when you're no longer of use to him.

Thanks for doing this - excellent idea!

This will be fascinating. Stores have already increased prices just in anticipation of his tariff threats. His clueless, undereducated supporters have been sold the big lie so many times, I’ve lost count.

Expand full comment

I think we should encourage folks to do this everywhere. I live in California and I don't believe things are the same in urban areas where there is competition versus the places where there is little choice. Also we can watch food prices on Amazon or other places that deliver food.

Kroger has a giant monopoly in Ohio, so they pretty much can price any way they want. Our Giant Eagle stores aren't that numerous around the state.

But the proliferation of Aldis in Ohio must have been a big surprise to Kroger. I wonder how much that has affected their price gouging.
