I believe that there are some attributes which are perhaps more likely to be found in younger people, as well as the fact that they have a larger stake in the future than those of us nearing the end of our lives. It always lifts my heart to see young people taking public offices. That said, other qualities definitely matter greatly and a mix of young, energetic folks and those with great experience is ideal.

Lovely, thank you for sharing this sage advice. This is one of the reasons I give for being pro-Biden. There is too much going on for someone without extensive governing experience. We need to get over this hump. There are a number of great governors in the wings. And re: John Glenn, we lived in Kent at the time of the early flights (my father's family are long time Ohioans) and I was in elementary school at the time. So exciting to have John Glenn in space and from Ohio!

It's annoying to hear republicans say we should vote for them, because they are not politicians. I am from a family of career public servants who have worked in state, county, and federal positions, including law enforcement. I prefer candidates with experience in government at any level. It's upsetting to watch folks with no legislative background win seats in the U.S. House and Senate (and in 2016, the presidency). Often, they don't know how to propose legislation, form bipartisan coalitions, serve on committees, understand how spending works, or respond to the needs of their constituents. Former Ohio Congressman Tim Ryan would have made an excellent senator. Instead, he lost to venture capitalist J.D. Vance, who is beholden to a tech oligarch and flipped from criticizing Trump to bending the knee in order to win. I'm extremely worried about Sen. Sherrod Brown, who along with John Glenn, is one of Ohio's greatest U.S. Senators. He must be reelected.

John would be appalled at our Ohio Stste Legislature, doing its best to undermine public education, and exacerbate racial and financial divides.
