New year's resolution: Everyone needs to speak up in press releases or social media on a weekly or daily basis. Start calling for Trump to be locked up and start calling him what he is a DOMESTIC TERRORIST
I'm in. I recently found out that my great grandmother Martha Smith Owen was an active member of the League of Women Voters when she came to Cleveland in the early part of the 20th century. She was born in 1879. She lived into her 90's, so she was an active member of the League when women won the right to vote. I have been working to register voters, circulate petitions to end gerrymandering, and lobbying for voting rights for more than a decade, and before that I taught third and fourth graders lessons in democracy. I am often very anxious and upset about the setbacks. But I know I have to persevere in this fight. Thank you for putting it in perspective with your story about your own suffragist ancestor.
Great read thanks for sharing. As a lifelong democrat I will always pledge my support and defend our democracy our constitution and the people of the United States of America.
All hands on deck. I can remember felling exhausted and disheartened trying to work full time, take care of a parent with dementia while knocking on doors, phone banking etc and lose so badly in Ohio the last presidential race. Yet as Dave keeps saying, this fight is for the rest of our lives. We will win some and lose some but the more “hands and hearts” on deck will surely help procure a legacy worth handing down and a democracy we want to live and thrive in all ways possible.
A sober, yet inspiring email this morning, David… using one of my favorite passages from the book! Thank you for being so dedicated and bearing the baton your g-g-g-g-grandmother picked up for us … with us.
Good story. It reminds me of this quote, which I've found motivational, from I.F. Stone: “The only kinds of fights worth fighting are those you are going to lose, because somebody has to fight them and lose and lose and lose until someday, somebody who believes as you do wins. In order for somebody to win an important, major fight 100 years hence, a lot of other people have got to be willing – for the sheer fun and joy of it – to go right ahead and fight, knowing you’re going to lose. You mustn’t feel like a martyr. You’ve got to enjoy it.”
This is a wonderful offering for the new year, David. Thank you for this reminder! And I love hearing about this woman - an ancestor of yours!! of course.....it's in the gene pool! I will do all I can in our city and state and country to work for these precious values. Your leadership makes a huge difference to me and many of us, I am sure.
On dark days when we reflect on how close we are to losing more freedoms and how many Americans seem to either be unaware of the seriousness of the challenge or see no problem with a more autocratic, "Christian only" society that marginalizes others, it is easy to feel overwhelmed. Your reinforced message from "Saving Democracy" on this New Year's Day, reminds us of the long, never ending journey, the reality of setbacks AND the need to never give up. Every effort to preserve democracy and protect our vital, hard-earned freedoms is a positive step ... even if we feel it is only a tiny step. Thanks for the inspiration! ALSO, David, we all know you are a great artist from your weekly Sunday efforts, but being able to draw the ebbs and rise of tides on a calm and beautiful sea shore is remarkable! 😊 Peace and good wishes for the New Year! Lovely video to calm us, and great information to help us gird our loins so to speak. I think women will be a HUGE factor in the coming year. We’re pissed off!
