I think this is a great idea. Someone--not sure if it fits here or not--also needs to keep track of things like prices, border crossings, energy production, infectious disease outbreaks, crime rates, etc, because Trump will lie about all of those things in order to give himself credit where he can and blame Biden where he can't.
My first grandchild and only granddaughter was born a month before the 2018 election - the year I ran in the OH10 against Mike Turner. In 2019, I started a journal for her so she would have a first hand account of my thoughts & feelings about these incredible times we are living in. I'm currently halfway through my 5th volume.
Both of my parents lived into their 90s but with dementia. I plan to live a long life but it doesn't mean I'll remember everything, especially the details. And given Trump loves to flood the zone with $hiT, it's hard to keep it all straight. At some point she'll come home from school having talked about some aspect of these times and ask me what I thought - I want her to have the contemporaneous account.
I don't write it daily and often I sit with Heather Cox Richardson's recap then share my perspective. I plan to let her have them when she's 18 (she's currently 6 and in kindergarten). My fear is she won't be able to read them because they are no longer being taught cursive in school. Her mom, a history major, pointed out in conversation yesterday that most historical records are written in cursive. Gee, it's almost like Republicans knew that when they pushed to end the practice.
I hope we all are doing this. Some researcher in 25 yrs needs the first hand accounts, written down, to correct the attempts at re-writing history that is sure to come.
I like your idea. But I'd also like to see a list of all Trump's promises and a record kept of which ones he kept. And in some cases, the impact on us Americans.
Sadly, tragically, you may be documenting the burning down of the house the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr worried the Civil Rights Movement was integrating into.
Donald Trump is the chief arsonist. Elon Musk is gleefully supplying more fuel for the total destruction.
America failed its open book exam - the November 5, 2024 Election.
David, Much appreciation to you for doing the contemporaneous account for exactly the reason you state. This will be an enormous service as we assess the true damage that will occur with this administration. And it is crucial that we do, so that perhaps at midterms (optimistic here), people will be disgusted with the state of affairs and vote out a lot of congresspeople who helped bring it all about.
Great idea! We need to keep a record. It would be great If we could find ways to store this information in a database that could be easily updated, viewed, downloaded, shared, queried, measured etc.
Maybe some of our tech inclined community could step forward to make this a reality.
Definitely a good idea. Just Trump by himself commits more crimes than anyone can keep up with or even remember. Add to that the crimes of his cronies and minions, crimes committed on his behalf, that a daily list is the only way.
Agreed that the censorship and post-censorship world will really suck. Everyone will want go and refer to the official version because it's written
down officially. Especially the young. And us oldsters will be trying to say, "No no kids, it didn't happen that way. The real numbers said something different!" And everyone will have some doubt in their minds if what they think is so is really so. They tried to tell us how hard it can be to live in a dictatorship. You don't know what's true, so you don't act.. Everyone is pulling in different directions. Nothing gets done. The dictator is safe.
I remember when we all were so much younger and naive. We used to have a a saying, "You have a right to your own opinion but you don't have a right to your own facts". Ahhh... to be so naive and
I always appreciate your perspective. I fear that someone so 'close' to the action may not be the best contemporaneous account for the future, but I certainly don't disagree with your ability or right to write from your point of view. Without defending anyone's actions I would suggest that ambassador to France has long been a political patronage position, so no surprise to me there. Should a contemporaneous account note previous history? Probably not....
Excellent idea. Thank you so much for doing this. We all need to be aware of the many actions against democracy that will take place during Trump's presidency. Your decision to record these events on a daily basis will help us remember the details and allow us to reference them as we weather the next four years.

Right. The various government offices used to maintain real numbers. We can't hope that Trumpians will.
I saw that about the prices etc. I appreciate anyone who keeps records as it is a thankless job.
Yes, please. I follow other substacks that do this, but it is good to have different perspectives. Check out The Weekly List by Amy Siskind.

Thank you David - I spread the word about you wherever I can.
Great! We need permanent records of how this happened. These days will be written about much as the Civil War was.
Thank you, this is an important task.
A contemporaneous account is a great idea! History may not treat our generation kindly and knowing that we did what we could is worth documenting.
Stars and Stripes Forever! We’ve emerged from dark periods before and can still make amends for a more perfect union

Fantastic idea David. I will archive the results and urge others to do so as well.
