I’ve been hearing this for a few weeks now, but it’s been confirmed in recent days: Trump, Vance and their election-rigging lemmings are struggling to get the numbers they need to steal two House districts in Indiana.
So I asked my good friend Mary Noone, an Indiana democracy activist, to fill me in on what’s happening in the Hoosier state, and what we can do about it.
A couple tidbits from our conversation:
the Governor caved to Trump pressure yesterday and called a special session for the election-rigging plan, to take place next Monday, but…
a number of Republicans in the Indiana Senate have already publicly opposed the Trump plan to steal Indiana’s last two Democratic House seats:
a number of other Republican Senators remain up in the air—according to Mary, they may be up to 10 votes short of what they need
one of the behind-the-scenes people pushing to stop the gerrymandering is none other than Mike Pence — good for him! Former Governor Mitch Daniels is also urging Republicans to vote no on it.
polls have consistently shown that Indiana voters decisively oppose what Trump is trying to do — a recent one found that 53% opposed it, while only 34% supported it. Independents oppose it 59% to 28%!
there will no doubt be a lot of pressure on the remaining Republicans to cave—including threats and intimidation from around the country
but there are also a lot of opportunities for us to support this unique, bipartisan coalition in Indiana that is fighting to uphold democracy, beginning tonight:
