Day 163 — May 3, 2025
Early in the Trump Administration, Cardinal Timothy Dolan told America that Donald Trump “takes his Christian faith seriously.”
And yesterday—just weeks after the death of the actual Pope, days after a funeral where Trump was looking at his phone and violated dress protocol, and days before the process to select a new one begins—the official White House account tweeted out an image of the President of the United States as the Pope:
It’s easy to get used to all this, but it’s safe to say this type of official communication is unprecedented in our history. (And will be looked on by future generations as downright insane that we sunk this low).
Back to Cardinal Dolan: “Well, you know, it wasn't good." He also said he hoped Trump “didn't have anything to do with that." (Um, your Eminence….the White House was retweeting a tweet from Trump’s direct account).
A bishop from Illinois was more blunt: “This is deeply offensive to Catholics especially during this sacred time that we are still mourning the death of Pope Francis and praying for the guidance of the Holy Spirit for the election of our new Pope.”
And yes, this again reminds me of my post the other day of all the jokes told about Soviet leaders. Here’s another:
“Leonid Ilyich is in surgery."
"His heart again?"
"No, chest expansion surgery, to make room for one more Gold Star medal."
