The Opportunities of 2025

And, Exciting News: Lincoln Project Relaunching “Trump’s Project 2025”

The Lincoln Project’s Rick Wilson and I had a wonderful discussion about how and why we must hit the ground running next year. If you’re looking for some end-of-year hope and motivation, tune in.

Bottom line: there are real opportunities that will present themselves in the coming election cycles. But to take advantage of them, we have to get to work in early 2025. And the work starts with running in more places, and at levels we too often don’t pay attention to:

“There are a number of things that should motivate us to push back….If we let the worst of what they’re doing settle in, it settles in for much longer than if we fight back sooner…Heroes of our past have overcome far more than what we face right now….

We need to gear up for the opportunity…This is the second term of Trump’s presidency…The best year in Ohio, in decades, was 2006….

We don’t know what’s going to happen, but we should be preparing if that moment comes where they’ve overplayed their mandate—which hardly exists—our side will be energized, Trump voters generally have not shown up in midterms….If that moment arises, you want to have done the homework and legwork to take advantage of that opportunity…

You have a real opportunity at the statehouse level….There’s Congress, there’s Senate seats, but…are Democrats smart enough to run in more places and to run in districts that feel pretty red?….In years analogous to this people won that no one expected to win because of a broader pushback against a mandate that was overplayed. They’re going to dramatically overplay….There’s a real opportunity at the statehouse level..and those gains have real long-term impacts because of the role statehouses play in shaping democracy.”

As I explain, the point of the podcast is to capture, through stories, how the various proposals and promises Trump has made—and that Project 2025 makes—will play out… “so we don’t lose sight of that amid the chaos [] Trump’s trying to create….”

Why does this matter?

“We’re better prepared to deal with it and to push back if we see what’s coming as opposed to continue to be shocked and, at the 11th hour, then trying to address something that in the end was actually quite predictable.”

Day 23 — December 23, 2024 — Withdrawing from the WHO

Numerous media outlets reported that the Trump Administration plans to remove the United States from the World Health Organization on Trump’s first day in office. The United States is the largest funder of the WHO, and its withdrawal would likely undermine global pandemic surveillance, response and coordination. The US absence would also leave the organization subject to the influence of other major nations, such as China.
