“The Fifth Vote”: An Interview on Truth versus Fiction
As many of you know, in October, I released “The Fifth Vote” — my latest novel. It’s anchored in the true story of how I was abducted at gun point in my first year as a member of Cincinnati City Council; and after I was freed, underwent the whipsaw of having widespread doubt cast upon my story. My book, although fiction, draws on those real-life events to capture the experience of fearing for your life, and then having many publicly speculate that you made it up. The fictional story then dives into the world of brass-tacks politics and corruption.
A few weeks back, I did a long interview with Anna Staver on WOSU (an NPR station in Columbus). We talked about what really happened, what prompted me to write about it as a novel, and, among other things, my writing process.
I enjoyed the conversation—I hope you do as well.
