There are few people I get more fired up to talk to than my friend Jess Piper, who spends much of her time, as I do, trying to share with folks around the country our respective experiences (in Ohio and Missouri), where we’ve seen so much of the attack of democracy up close and in person.
Sadly, it’s all been a preview of the bleak national picture we now face. But it’s also taught us valuable lessons.
We both:
understand the lawlessness and downward spiral taking place in gerrymandered states like Missouri and Ohio;
witness the disaster playing out for communities and kids via the universal vouchers afflicting our two states and so many others;
see and act on the imperative of running everywhere as a key strategy to undoing so much of this damage;
see the value of organizing from the bottom-up, and not simply from the top-down.
So it was a thrill to talk with Jess yesterday about all these issues, and other central themes and observations in the second edition of my book “Saving Democracy.” Her work is an inspiration for several of the key chapters of the book, some of which we dive into in our conversation.
Listen to the entire conversation above—you’ll be glad you did…
