It’s been a busy few weeks in national and state politics. This weekend, I had a chance to share my perspective on some of those developments.
Take a look:
ALI VELSHI
Yesterday with Ali Velshi, Molly-Jong Fast and I explained how the special election win in New York last week continued a long winning streak for democracy, going back to the middle of 2022. Rather than losing sleep over every poll and daily news cycle that we DON’T CONTROL, my advice: take note of the factors and hard work that has created that winning streak, and keep it going.
Watch it HERE:
THE SPECTRUM
Perhaps the most substantive news show on Ohio politics is The Spectrum, on NBC4 in Columbus, led by the powerhouse journalist Colleen Marshall. The three Ohio stories The Spectrum addressed this week were: 1) the egregious conflicts of interests at the Ohio Supreme Court; 2) the magistrate decision that Governor DeWine violated Ohio law regarding the Teachers Pensions Board; 3) and the latest indictments in the FirstEnergy scandal.
Think about how broken Ohio is that one show includes three such enormous scandals all playing out at the same time! And kudos to the intense coverage NBC4 is giving to these issues.
I appreciate that they asked me to weigh in on the roundtable that appears at the show’s end. I didn’t mince words.
I highly recommend watching the whole show to get a sense of just how much Ohio is off the rails when it comes to ethics and the rule of law.
THE HILL
One of the highlights of my visit to Yale Law School a few weeks back was meeting and getting to know a student there named Gevin Reynolds. He’s a first-year law student and serves on on the board of the Yale Law School Democrats. Before law school, Gevin served the Biden-Harris White House from 2021 to 2023, holding several roles including speechwriter to Vice President Kamala Harris. He’s now a frequent contributor to the Root, writing about issues of race, democracy, and politics. He has been quoted in CNN and has published opinion pieces in outlets including USA Today, the Hill, the New York Daily News, and the Atlanta Journal Constitution.
You can follow Gevin on Twitter/X at @GevinReynolds
But I introduce him now because Gevin and I hit it off so much, we decided to collaborate on issues that intersect with our joint interests. I will feature some of his future writings as part of this newsletter, and we will also write pieces jointly.
Our first piece ran this morning in The Hill, highlighting the long, ugly pattern in America of erasing key moments of Black history, and why it’s so important that we actually learn from and find inspiration from those very moments, among others.
As we write: “Recognizing this pattern allows us to put the present attacks on Black history in their proper context and reorient our fight where we should: the state level.”

Thanks for all your support as we work together to inspire folks to keep fighting for democracy every day, everywhere.
I liked the post before I go back and watch the shows because I’m totally in awe of your stamina.
David’s “a long winning streak for democracy, going back to the middle of 2022. Rather than losing sleep over every poll and daily news cycle that we DON’T CONTROL, my advice: take note of the factors and hard work that has created that winning streak, and keep it going.” is the main takeaway here. I might have to re-use that one myself a few times.
