People often ask: what the hell is going on in Ohio? Wasn’t it a swing state? A bellwether for the country? How did you go from John Glenn to JD Vance?
It’s a complicated story.
But a key component is that Ohio has undergone a relentless assault on democracy and freedom since 2011. And except for a brief window, there have been almost no checks and balances to stop it. That’s allowed lawlessness, corruption and extremism to all converge in a non-stop attack on democratic norms.
But this year, we have of an enormous opportunity to turn it around.
It starts with Issue 1 (which would end gerrymandering—so vote YES), and all the great candidates running for the Ohio legislature.
But even a victory for Issue 1, just like last year’s victory for reproductive freedom, will only deliver true change if we have an Ohio Supreme Court that respects its clear language and the will of the people.
And we know that will only happen if we sweep the three races for Ohio Supreme Court Justice, and flip the court. (I describe the dynamics in the video above).
And that opportunity, my friends, is in our grasp. (We have a recent history of the Democratic candidates for Ohio Justice overperforming the ticket. So the energy Kamala Harris is bringing to the ticket potentially puts these races within reach).
This is the exact same opportunity we seized in Wisconsin last year, where flipping the Wisconsin court majority began the process of rebuilding Wisconsin’s democracy. And it would give us the type of independent courts I described just the other day, where fair courts in Missouri, Utah and South Carolina protected democracy and freedom.
So wherever you are, if you’re concerned about democracy and freedom, please help our three wonderful Ohio Justice candidates get the support they need to succeed this November. Their wins would be a HUGE win for democracy and freedom in a state with a democracy winning streak already under way.
