It’s a basic rule that applies to so many parts of life.
It’s so basic that, as you’ll see in the video above, my six- and nine-year old sons understand it intuitively:
The team that is always on offense almost inevitably wins the game.
That’s true in soccer, of course.
But it also happens to be true in politics, and for democracy itself.
And the crisis at the moment is that the side always on offense is the side attacking democracy—and they are largely on offense at the state level, where the rules on democracy are written and most issues are addressed. Even worse, the side that values democracy is not only not on offense enough—but in far too many places where democracy is being attacked, it’s not even on defense!
Which is why things feel like they keep getting worse—because they inevitably will if only one side is on offense.
The reason I wrote my new book, Saving Democracy: A User’s Manual, was to show everyone concerned about the state of our democracy not only that we must go on offense, but how everyone, individually, can go on offense wherever you live.
Since launching the book yesterday, I’ve been honored to join Chris Hayes, Morning Joe, and CNN This Morning to discuss all the ways people can get involved.
But the best way to see it is to read the book itself, which includes best practices, case studies, organizations you can work with, and even worksheets walking through how you can get involved. The more people take the steps I and others recommend, wherever they are, the more we can secure our democracy from the attack in states.
So please grab your copy of the book if you’re interested;
And if you’ve already ordered a copy, please share this with others so they also learn what they can do.
BIG NEWS: Yesterday’s launch vaulted Saving Democracy to the #15(!) spot on Amazon’s list of “New Releases” — yes, ahead of “Tucker” — including number one in all its categories.
So the good news is, word is spreading. But my hope is that this is just a start. Let’s get as many people on offense as possible.
Thank you, and I look forward to your feedback.
