While the media tried to add any drama they could, the unsurprising outcome last night in Iowa has been in the cards for the past year. Lesson: you can’t topple the front runner if you refuse to take on the front runner.
The far bigger news was what happened in court and in public last week, when Trump claimed immunity so broad that he and his lawyers found themselves discussing Seal Team Six and assassinations. This was both terrible law and toxic politics for anyone but his most die-hard Trump supporters.
The truth is, it’s all a tell.
This so-called immunity is not only what Trump thinks…it’s what he thinks he needs. From the outset, the driving motivation of Trump’s campaign for president is that he believes running and winning will immunize him from accountability for past, current and future crimes.
There’s no other way out of his many legal jams, and he knows it. Which is why he says it so openly.
What’s amazing is that, beginning in Iowa yesterday, an entire party is going along with the plan.
But I remain confident that we as a country will not let it happen.
That is, if we keep working at all levels and everywhere!
NOTE: as we’d hoped, last week’s cartoon went viral. It’s the kind of content that sticks out from the usual, and can make an instant impression. We appreciate so many of you for stepping up so we can create and distribute this work widely.
And we hope others will join to keep it going. Please do so here:
