People have been voting in Ohio for the last week, and one thing is crystal clear: the people who want to lock their extreme abortion ban (with no exceptions for rape, incest or the health of the mother) into place are pulling out all the stops to defeat Issue 1.
And since they know most Ohioans support abortion access, and oppose their ban, their tactics to upend that pro-choice majority have been disturbing throughout.
It started with the shameless attack on Ohio’s direct democracy by trying to change the rules mid-stream, via the first Issue 1. Thank you to all who helped defeat that effort in August.
But now that original Issue 1, along with an abuse of the ballot-summary process (they used the process to present both confusing and highly politicized language to Ohio voters), could potentially lead to all sorts of confusion about November’s Issue 1—where we need people to vote “yes” and not “no” (as in August) to protect reproductive freedom.
And now as voting starts, we see a barrage of lies by Mike DeWine on down as to what Issue 1 does and doesn’t do. They want to make it about anything but the abortion ban DeWine signed that forced a ten-year old rape victim to travel to Indiana to get the care she needed.
Add it up, and you see the scale of their desperate effort to convince a pro-choice state to vote No on Reproductive Freedom.
We can not let this happen.

How?
We need to use the same grassroots energy that led to our historic victory in August to forge a victory FOR Issue 1 between now and Election Day.
There was a palpable electricity in August, but I must admit, I’m not feeling it yet now. Not at the same level, at least.
Which makes no sense, since the whole point of winning in August was to allow our majority voice to carry the day this November, and beyond.

We can not allow this state’s future to be the abortion ban DeWine signed—the one that so horrified the nation. But that’s exactly what Ohio’s future will be if Issue 1 fails.
