"Backin' Acton": United Mine Workers
Another Big Endorsement for the Campaign
Big news yesterday in the Ohio Governor’s race!
And I’ll let a few Ohioans drop some hints as to what it was:
“I’m a third generation coal miner. I’m one of nine children, every one of my brothers worked in the mines. My grandpap was a miner. It’s a way of life and work with dignity….[Amy] knows what it is to be tough. She went through trials that we couldn’t believe. We definitely want her in that governor’s seat rather than a billionaire just flying around the state in a jet airplane.”
“I’ve been a mineworker for 50 years. I didn’t realize Amy’s background in the Youngstown area, and how she had to be tough. She can relate to us. She knows what we stand for. She doesn’t just support the rich people, she supports everybody.”
These were two of the members of the the United Mine Workers of America, who yesterday endorsed Dr. Amy Acton in her race for Ohio Governor.
Here’s more:
Dave Dilly, UMWA member and coordinator for Coal Miners Political Action Committee:
“The United Mine Workers of America is excited to endorse Dr. Amy Acton for governor. She is the only candidate in this race who puts Ohio’s working families above corporations and special interests. While her opponent looks down on our state from his private jet, Ohioans are struggling with skyrocketing electric bills and healthcare bills. We need a governor who understands our communities, not an out of touch billionaire who thinks our workers are lazy and mediocre.”
United Mine Workers of America Local 1304 Financial Secretary Mel Woods:
“We’re supporting Dr. Acton in this race because she believes every worker deserves safety, respect and a strong voice. She stands with unions, protects working families and fights for the dignity of the middle class. This moment is bigger than politics; it’s about who we are and who we want to be. When we choose unity, responsibility, and a vision that includes all of us, we build a stronger future for our entire state. I believe that Ohio is ready to rise, and that Dr. Amy Acton can lead us in moving our state forward.”
Needless to say, we were thrilled by the endorsement:
“I am deeply honored to receive the United Mine Workers of America’s endorsement. UMWA has been on the frontlines of the fight for working families since its founding in 1890. As a proud member of a union family, I’m ready to advocate for fair wages, safe workplaces and strong benefits. I look forward to continuing UMWA’s historic legacy by lowering costs for Ohioans, putting working families over the needs of billionaires and special interests, and building an Ohio where everyone can thrive.”

Does she take aipac contributions?
Of course most of us realize the reality of campaigns and how important votes and endorsements are but will look forward to the day of reckoning comes and you and Amy have to square your desire to win with what would seem to be contradictory policy positions. Of course you may be courageous and rebellious in aligning yourself with Trump’s energy policies but I am not sure I would bet on that. Energy is a big part of our economy and a true competitive advantage so it truly is a top five policy area.
