Several weeks ago, I wrote about how the so-called “SAVE Act” would kneecap democracy by destroying the modern-day process of registering to vote. Versus all the ways we register now (online, through all sorts of organizations, by mail, etc), to register or re-register in the future, we’ll all be lining up in-person at election offices (which only 6% of Americans do today).
Along the way, millions of married women, voters of color, along with senior and younger voters, will be disproportionately thrown under the bus by this bill (and be assured, the authors know that that is exactly what will happen).
In the above whiteboard, I try to explain this in the clearest way possible for those still catching up on how bad this bill is. Please share it if you can:
Then….
TAKE ACTION!
This week, amid the economic chaos, Speaker Johnson and the GOP House majority are set to try to ram this bill through, then they’ll take it to the Senate. We have a better chance to stop it in the Senate, but starting now, we need to make as much noise as possible in the House.
So, please look up your member of Congress—and better yet, all the ones from your state (the Republicans in particular)—and call them to let them know how much you oppose this bill. You can get their contact information here.
If you are part of a group organizing protests, rallies, conversations or any other activity of late, please also ensure that all those involved are making these same calls.
This needs to be big and loud. As big and loud as our protests on Saturday.
When it comes to democracy in the short- and long-term, there will be no more significant bill coming forward—we MUST stop it.
