A Top-Down Problem

Cleaning Up Ohio’s Pay to Play Culture

Last week, it took the FBI to yet again root out Ohio scandal—the biggest bribery case in the history of our state.

This is just the most recent in a series of scandals that have one common thread…it takes the FBI to crack down on Ohio corruption.

Which begs the question: why does it always take the feds? Why can’t the state police itself? Are there not offices in Ohio meant to get in the way of this stuff? Are there not leaders positioned to change it all?

The answer is simple: when you take a close look at all the offices that might be involved in leading an effort to take on corruption and Ohio’s pay to play culture, it turns out that those offices and officeholders are themselves awash in that culture, some going back years.

From the Governor, Lt. Gov., on down, direct ties to these and other scandals, a broader pay-to-play mindset, rampant cronyism that’s affecting every branch of Ohio government (including, now, the Supreme Court), and a growing arrogance in how all this takes place in the wide open, together set the tone for the entire state—while ensuring that nothing is done to stop the next scandal.

And until Ohio voters (who pay the price for it all) and other officeholders decide enough is enough, the scandals will keep on coming.
